Aditya Om — The Filmmaker Many Fear, But Truth Embraces

Aditya Om, a fearless filmmaker from Uttar Pradesh, is known for his bold social justice films like Bandook, Shudra: The Rising, and Sant Tukaram. Amid backlash from religious and caste-based groups, his work continues to challenge orthodoxy and give voice to the oppressed. This tribute explores his journey through cinema and activism.

How many of you know this brilliant and bold filmmaker?

Aditya Om, director of the now-controversial film #SantTukaram, has ignited a firestorm across ideological factions in India — especially in Maharashtra, where even some claiming to be the saint’s descendants have joined the backlash.

Who Is Aditya Om?

Born in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh on October 5, 1975, as Aditya Singh, he began his career as an actor in Telugu cinema, appearing in films like Lahiri Lahiri Lahirilo (2002) and Dahanam (2023), earning both popularity and critical recognition.

His Cinematic Journey of Resistance

2011 – Directed and produced Bandook, a political thriller on caste violence and gun culture in UP. The script is now archived in the Oscars Library.

Co-produced Shudra: The Rising, a daring film exposing the oppression of Shudras by upper castes — bold, raw, and unsettling for the status quo.

Followed up with socially-driven cinema like Maassab (2018), Maila (2021), and Bandi (2025).

He also founded Edulightment, an NGO working in Telangana to support education, rural libraries, solar power, and healthcare access.

#SantTukaram – Film & Controversy

Released on July 18, 2025, Sant Tukaram features Subodh Bhave as Tukaram, Arun Govil as Lord Vitthal, and Sheena Chohan as Avali Jijabai.

Despite its spiritual depth and cinematic sincerity, the film faced organized backlash in Pune. Protests from the Sant Tukaram Sansthan, abrupt show cancellations, and pressure from religious factions led to mounting financial losses — despite the film having a clean “U” certificate from the CBFC.

Backlash & Bravery

The film dared to show Sant Tukaram as a revolutionary voice against caste injustice, which predictably upset those wedded to sanitized mythology and institutional orthodoxy.

But Aditya Om stands firm — against pressure, propaganda, and profit loss — continuing to make art that speaks for the silenced.

Why He Deserves National Recognition

A rare voice from Uttar Pradesh in a sea of commercially-driven cinema, Aditya Om uses film as a weapon of awareness.

From bandit lands to Bhakti poetry, from Shudra struggle to classroom inequity, he chooses substance over spectacle.

Through his art and his NGO, he uplifts where others entertain.

We salute Aditya Om — for his courage, clarity, and commitment to cinema with a conscience.

In an industry chasing stardom, he chooses social truth.
In a society suppressing dissent, he chooses resistance through art.
