“Does your CM ever sleep?”
Surprised BJP MPs ask.

Just hours after a bill was passed in the Lok Sabha around midnight (or early morning to be precise), the Chief Minister took three swift actions within eight hours:

  1. Passed a resolution condemning the bill in the Assembly
  2. Wore black badges as a mark of protest
  3. Filed a case in the Supreme Court

This has now become a talking point across the country.
How was this even possible?

On April 2, Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju reintroduced the Waqf Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha after it was reviewed by the parliamentary standing committee.

The bill, considered extremely harmful to the Muslim community, was strongly opposed by DMK MPs throughout the day, making their voices heard in Parliament.

After prolonged debates, the bill was passed at 1:45 a.m. on April 3 through a vote:

  • 288 votes in favour
  • 232 votes against
It was passed and became law.

CM Stalin had been awake through the night, closely following the developments, including the debate and final voting.

He was especially watching how Chandrababu Naidu’s TDP and Nitish Kumar’s JD(U) would vote. Once it became clear that their support led to the bill’s passage, he immediately contacted Minister E.V. Velu at 2 a.m., saying:

“The Waqf Amendment Bill has been passed in Parliament. We must register our opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly tomorrow. All of us should wear black badges. Please make the arrangements.”

By 6 a.m., Minister Velu checked whether they had any black badges from earlier use — but as the DMK is now the ruling party, that was unlikely. So, he asked his domestic staff to find and buy black ribbons from any nearby fancy store.

By 7:30 a.m., they returned with black ribbons, and in just under an hour, they prepared black badges for all DMK and alliance MLAs.

Later that day, the black badges were distributed to all alliance MLAs, and the Chief Minister himself arrived at the Assembly wearing one.

In the Assembly, CM Stalin condemned the Waqf Amendment Bill and announced that the Tamil Nadu Government would challenge it in the Supreme Court (on April 3 itself).

A law passed in Parliament during the early hours of the morning received its first, bold opposition within seven hours — from a State Assembly. This swift reaction, many say, was entirely due to CM Stalin’s alertness and speed of action — even AIADMK MLAs privately admitted this in conversation.

“Does your CM ever sleep? How is he this updated?”
— This was the reaction of some BJP MPs when they saw DMK MPs show up in Parliament the next day wearing black shirts.

At this point, it’s hard not to recall what the late Kalaignar Dr. Karunanidhi once said about his son:

“If there is one word for relentless hard work, it is Stalin.”

And the Chief Minister continues to prove that every single day — yesterday’s events are yet another testament to his unshakeable commitment to his principles.
